Beliefs About Celtic Butterflies

The Celts lived closely with the natural world.  They ascribed meanings to everything from horses, to trees (see the Ogham alphabet).  The butterfly is a Celtic symbol of transformation, rebirth, and renewal.

The Celts believed that winged creatures, such as butterflies, had souls.  It was a common belief among Celts that butterflies would fly around in search of a new mother.  When they would find a new mother they would conceal themselves in her food or drink, and thus be swallowed.  Doing this would then impregnate the woman and the butterfly would be reborn as a human.

A bad omen among Celts was when a butterfly would flutter around at night.  This omen was thought to fortel of impending death.  It is because night was the natural domain of the butterfly’s cousin, the moth.
