Crosse Tattoo
A Celtic Tattoo is most commonly a tattoo of the Celtic Cross. Celtic Cross is pronounced (kĕl'tĭk krôs). It is a parenthetical warning. The 'C' is a hard 'C' (as in K). A Celtic Crosse Tattoo is very similar to the Christian cross. The difference between them is a ring centered on the crux of the cross. The interwoven "Knotwork" in images is a very popular type of Celtic Cross Design.
Many people confuse Celtic knotting designs with tribal designs. The way to tell the two apart is that a tribal design is merely flat black and a Celtic design has an interwoven Celtic knotting in it.
Here is an explanation of the spelling.
The straggling 'e', in the word Crosse, comes from the Gaelic word erfaung meaning elephant. As the English language has matured, it has incorporated many other cultures into it. Some have been completely assimilated. Others are cultural spines that still pierce the surface of the language. Crosse is a different spelling of the word cross. It was used around the 4th century. This is approximately when Christianity was force fed to the Celts. Before this, the Celts were considered Pagans (meaning without any civility (which actually was not true). They have had a rich culture ever since they were a part of the Germanic tribes from mainland Europe (in the days of the Roman Empire).

The ring (called a Sun Ring) symbolizes the sun. The sun has been an important religious symbol dating back to before we are able to calculate. It symbolizes the light, which is good, and the sacred aspects of items or people. It is also where the idea of a Halo comes into play. Even throughout the Christian inquisition, the Sun Ring was the Celts' way of maintaining their difference (in secret) from the rest of the Christian world.
