Celtic Triple Spiral Symbol Meaning
The Celtic triple spiral is a symbol of the Triple goddess (maiden, mother, crone) also, waxing waning and full moon (in ancient times).

The Celtic triple spiral can be found inside the megolithic Newgrange passage tomb. It is on the entrance stone, and on some of the curbstones that surround the mound. The triple spiral or triskele is a Celtic and pre-Celtic symbol.

The Celtic triple spiral is believed to be an ancient symbol of pre-Celtic and Celtic beliefs. The triple spiral appears in various forms in pre-Celtic and Celtic art. The earliest examples of the triple spiral are carved on pre-Celtic stone monuments. They can later be found in the Celtic Christian illuminated manuscripts of Insular art. The triple spiral was possibly the precursor to the later
Celtic triskele design found in Celtic manuscripts.

The symbol meaning of the Celtic triple spiral to the pagans who built Newgrange and other monuments is unknown. In recent history, Celtic Christians have used it as a representation for the Christian trinity. Also, in recent history Neopagan religions such as Celtic Reconstructionist Paganism and Wicca have used the symbol to represent a variety of triplicities in their belief systems.

In the recent Celtic Reconstructionist Paganism, the triple spiral often stands for the "three realms" - Land, Sea and Sky. They also use it for a number of deities who are described in the lore as "threefold" or triadic. In their religion, god Manannán is probably most often symbolized by the
triskele. Also among their Gods to be symbolized by the triple spiral is too is the goddess Brighid. Many Celtic-inspired Wiccans also use the triple spiral symbol, most often to represent the concept of the triple goddess.

"The triple spiral may represent the nine month period of human pregnancy".

To help clarify the above statement for the Celtic triple spiral symbol, the sun takes a quarter (1/4) of a year to go from the celestial equator (an equinox) to the extreme north (or the extreme south) declination (a solstice), and vice versa. During each three-month period, the sun's path across the sky seems to form a closely-wound quasi-helical shape. This shape is likened to a spiral. The spirals could represent nine months and provide an explanation for a link between fertility and the triple-spiral symbol.
