Celtic Artwork

Celtic artwork has been around since 400BC.  It can be found in stonework, in the Book of Kells, and all over Europe.  It is still common today within Ireland.  Celtic knotwork today is more common as an Irish tattoo.  If you have an Irish tattoo it could date all the way back thousands of years and still hold special meaning for the Celts today.

As far as archeological and anthropological findings go the true meaning of Celtic designs and Irish tattoos are something people don’t really know much about.  The truth is, that with most Irish people each design holds a special, personal meaning.

Celtic Knot Tattoos

Many different Irish tattoo knot designs include Hallstatt, La Tene, Knot work Interlace and Spirals. These are the more common types found in Irish Tattoos. These designs are extremely complex and date back for thousands of years. Irish jewelry also uses the ancient designs. You can see it in woodwork, ceramics, embroidery, and many other crafts as well.
Leprachauns

It is well known that Leprechauns are known as fighters... as are the Irish. Thus, Irish tattoos are often drawn as a Leprachaun with his fists raised. A Leprachaun does not have to have his fists raised in a drawing to be an Irish tattoo. It depends on the artist and their experience with the color green (another outstanding factor in an Irish tattoo).

An Irish clover can also be an Irish tattoo. The symbol commonly refers to Ireland and good luck. Again, the color of green is an outstanding factor in the Irish clover of an Irish tattoo. See Celtic shamrock for Irish clover designs.

Celtic cross tattoos

Celtic crosses come from Ireland and can be seen almost everywhere in Ireland and across the world.  Celtic knots and swirls make them a unique design.  The Celtic cross tattoo has become a favorite for many people seeking to have an Irish tattoo with strong Celtic meaning.  Not every artist is capable of tattooing Irish tattoos, or Celtic crosses, so be sure to check your tattoo artists portfolio before you allow him/her to tattoo it on you.  Artists differ in shades and color in their tattoos, keep in mind that selecting your shade and colors is an important part of selecting your tattoo artist.  Even just a shade of black in a Celtic cross tattoo image makes an impressive impact.

Irish Flag Tattoos

If the Irish tattoo you are considering is an Irish Flag tattoo, be sure to first consider which Irish flag would you like to get.  There are a number of flags that are in connection with Ireland.

There are a definately arguments as to why Yellow, Gold, or Orange is used in the flags.  Make sure you have a complete understanding of these colors in your Irish tattoo before you get it completed.  The last thing you want is an Irish tattoo that’s politically incorrect.  Make sure you select your colors carefully about these colors in your Irish flag tattoo.  If the artist is experienced enough he/she will know the best shades for use in your Irish flag tattoo.  They will also know the best shades to use that will look best with your shade of skin.
True Irish Tattoo vs. a Fake Irish Tattoo

What makes an Irish tattoo is the unique technique in the methods used to draw the patterns.  It is the technique that is used.  An Irish tattoo that is knotwork uses the dot system of drawing. It is an Irish artists traditional way of showing their heritage or love for the Irish Culture and style.  All the Celtic artwork on these pages uses the dot system.  Other methods include computer generated knotwork and graph produced knotwork.  These ways are not traditional Irish, and not suitable for a true Irish tattoo.
