The Luckenbooth is a symbol that has two intertwined hearts with a crown. It is a Scottish symbol of love that dates clear back to the 17th century. It is a symbol that is often given as a token of affection, betrothal, and friendship. The luckenbooth is usually made with engraved silver and is in the shape of a heart, or two hearts, entwined with a crown that is usually on top of the heart(s).

Symbolism

The heart symbolizes love and the crown symbolizes loyalty. Both the heart and the crown also appear on the claddagh ring.

Traditions

A tradition with the Luckenbooth is to pin it to one's firstborn baby's blanket as a good luck charm. Luckenbooths are most often worn by women.

It is traditional to give a luckenbooth to someone whom you want to show affection or would like to betroth. It can also be given as a token of friendship.
